CLAYTON, North Carolina – This past Saturday, December 9th, the Clayton Rugby Football Club hosted their annual Toys for Tots Drive and Charity Rugby Match. This year was a special one as the event took place at the club’s newly opened home facility and it merged with the toy drive run by UNC Health Johnston.
“This was easily the most toys that we’ve ever collected,” said Clayton RFC President Ted Hardy. “Not even close. We’re so grateful to everyone that helped make this a special day on many fronts.”
The day kicked off with some open touch rugby with an appearance by Santa Claus, followed by youth players playing against their parents, and then finished with the Clayton Old Boys taking on the Southern Pines Old Boys in an entertaining back and forth match. Southern Pines came out ahead at the final whistle 46-32 in a match played in the true spirit of rugby.
The club would like to thank everyone that came out to bring toys and support the event. Big thanks goes to club sponsor UNC Health Johnston, the Town of Wilson’s Mills, and club sponsor The Catlady Lender for supporting the event. The club is looking forward to many more in the future and expanding the event to include more rugby (and toys) next year!
